The article explores one of the most important issues in the history of international relations. The author evaluates political, military strategic and economic importance of Bosporus and Dardanelles for Russia and the Great Britain and reviews the gradual transformation of Anglo-Russian relations from confrontation to cooperation. The issue of the Black Sea Straits is examined against the background of the Triple Alliance and the Entente. Development of the navy forces is analyzed in the context of the general political situation. Among the Russian and British sources used in the article are the diplomatic correspondence and the early 20th century periodicals and press of the period. Such research in the fi eld of the Russian historiography of the early 20th century is undertaken for the fi rst time.
