The article explores the phenomenon of verbal irony in two novels, “The Twelve Chairs” by the Soviet novelists I. Ilf and E. Petrov, and “Cat Country” by the Chinese writer Lao She. Verbal irony is an important rhetorical technique which helps to express insightful ideas and implications in a satirical novel. The irony in the novel, beyond an understandable semantic meaning, steers the readers’ attention towards a wider perception continuum. It seems bene fi cial from the comparative literary criticism and linguistics point of view to examine and compare the irony and ironic spirit in the two works from different literary traditions.
