A. E. Scheglova

The issues considered in the paper are relevant because the modern pedagogical science is focused on children and their preparation for vigorous, independent activity, creative constructive participation in transformation of the country and society. Due to this, the formation of a child’s personality is primarily related to moral education, questions of discipline, encouragement and punishment. The above-mentioned aspects and especially the experience of the historical and pedagogical heritage are poorly studied in modern pedagogics. The scientifi novelty consists in the fact that the author conceptually presents the historical and pedagogical assessment of merits of prominent teachers in domestic pedagogics, and studies the valuable pedagogical heritage concerning the use of encouragement and punishment in children’s education of the 18th century and the fist half of the 19th century. Recommendations of the teachers of the past and their evaluation have theoretical and practical value for modern parents and teachers in education of children.
Key words: moral education, discipline, encouragement, punishment, rules of conduct,
reasonable education.
