The article shows the philosophical point of view on the social and historical conditions
of such a phenomenon as spiritual freedom. Particular attention is paid to this practice
in Russia. Signifiant quantitative “leaps” in the country’s modernisation often took
place in the conditions of authoritarianism. The currently continuing breach between the
industrial and cultural practices does not make it possible to ascertain the occurrence of
a truly democratic society. At the same time, the comparative analysis of the situation in
the Western countries and Russia reveals the same types of problems to be addressed by the global community.
