The article examines the complex relationship between the Churches of Rome and Constantinople in the 4th and 5th centuries AD. During this time the preconditions for
the tragic division of the Christian world were formed. Having lost the political importance of their see, the Roman pontiffs began to develop the idea of apostolic succession, challenging the political rise of Constantinople. Subsequently, this con fl ict would lead to the events of 1054.
