The Image of a Modern Woman in Chinese Women's Magazines in the fi rst half of the 20th Century

 The article explores the process of value changes in the societal image of a Chinese woman as portrayed by the women’s magazines in the fi rst half of the 20th century, during the period of development of daily life culture in China. The author analyzes, on the one hand, the impact on the development of image of traditional values connected with social status and the role of woman in the family, and, on the other hand, the orientation of woman’s magazines towards reforms and modernity. The formation of a new image of a woman was taking place during the period of complex cultural upheavals in China and primarily affected changes in the woman’s appearance without any impact on her social status in the family or society.
