The article poses some conceptual folk religiosity features of medieval Russian
Christians, based on the material of “The Questions of Kirik” (the monument of canon
law of Ancient Rus). Questions of the Novgorod clergy help us assess the perception
of Christianity in Russia. It is shown that the spiritual needs were focused on the ritual
side of Christianity. The author comes to a conclusion that the religious consciousness
during the spread and consolidation of the positions of Christianity in Rus had the Old
Testament nature. This is evidenced by the fundamental nature of the opposition “pure —
impure” for the religious worldview of man of Ancient Rus, as well as the whole
legalistic, ceremonial perception of Christianity.
