The paper reviews the category of authorization in academic writing. The authorization follows the same stages of development as linguistics did in the 20th century on the whole and correlates with three main approaches (or models) describing the language of science: systematic-inventory, pragmalinguistic and cognitive-discursive models. Analytical and review approach, which takes into consideration different opinions, permits to determine the development pattern of the category of authorization and conclude that the authorization at its current stage of development reflects the discursive activity of the author/researcher, who uses various means and forms of self-reference (Selbstreferenz) in the context of established environment of social
relationship in the area of scientific and educational activities.
