The paper examines the sketches made by Vassily Shukhaev (1887– 1973) in preparation for the group portrait of the officers of the 4th Hussar regiment of Mariupol in the unfinished painting “Regiment in the Field” (1917, The State Russian Museum). The research is based on the documents from the Russian State Military Archive. The author
traces the names and ranks of the officers, finds biographical details for some of them and discovers the location of the graphic portraits, created in 1916. Special attention is paid to the portraits which location remains unknown. Further research and detailed attribution of these works will assist to identify the names and careers of the
portrayed officers, trace down their images in the photos as well as in “Regiment in the Field”.
