The legacy of Pyotr Borisovitch Ryazanov, a music composer, professor of the Leningrad Conservatory, music teacher, a musicologist and a folklorist, originated in the period of 1920-1930s. In his lifetime, his music pieces were performed rather often and were positively met by the both music-lovers and the critics. At present they have undeservedly fell into neglect and oblivion. Ryazanov’s contribution, an example of one of the movements of the Leningrad musical school in the fi rst half of the 20th century into the Russian musical culture, is yet to be fully appreciated. It is worth to note that in all areas of his activities he tried to choose the unbeaten tracks. This is symptomatic, in
particular, of that facet of his legacy, which could be defined as “a composer and folklore” relationship. Ryazanov was the first to uphold the “chastushka”, which heretofore was inconsiderately regarded as a low genre. In a number of his works he interpreted chastushka characteristic features in a unique way. During 1930s Ryazanov was attracted by the genre of a lyrical song, a new trend in the Soviet musical art of that period.
