The connections between the components in the inner structure of phraseological units
and in free word combinations are not identical. The syntactical relations between the
components of free word combinations have wider variation capability, whereas the connections between the components of phraseological units are a new type of combination. In some phraseological units the syntactic compatibility between the components in terms of the norm of language is violated. Changes in the inner structure of phraseological units are detected when they are used in speech. All this suggests that the syntactic relations between the components in the inner structure of phraseological units are more or less weakened and they have restricted valency and variation capability. These changes take place in the form of splitting and rearranging of phraseologism components, reduction or wedging of variable elements into compositions of phraseological units, substitution of alternants with variable elements within phraseological units, substitution of one of phraseologism components with a synonymous word, merging of two phraseological units into one, syntactical convertibility of phraseologisms.
