The paper is devoted to the rite of baptism among mountaineers-neophytes of the Karachai-Cherkessk Republic who have adopted Christianity. The study is based on the fieldwork material and reveals the details of thorough preparation for this event. Some changes in the way of committing the rite in the course of several years are singled out. The author describes in detail the phenomenon of water baptism and its role in neophytes’ spiritual life. The researcher argues for the thesis that studying this issue in the republic represents scientific novelty from the ethnographic point of view.
