The article examines the semantics of the word yellow in slang and the symbolism of
the colour in psychology, religion and culture and the etymology of the word in the
English language. Semantic changes, word formation and phrase-building with the word yellow are analysed according to the data from dictionaries of slang. They are compared with a view to establish the relationship between the semantics of the word yellow in both the standard and substandard English language. Slang units are analysed according to the cognitive features and divided into groups with common cognithemes listed according to the quantity principle in the descending order.
