 Isabella d’Este belonged to the most educated rulers of the Renaissance. She made
great efforts for creating a series of paintings for her studiolo in the Mantua residence.
Marchesa’s correspondence with Pietro Perugino demonstrates her erudition in ancient
culture and the direct infl uence of Philostratus’s “Imagines” on her thinking and
epistolary style.
