The article examines the importance of the work “An Essay on the Principle of Population” by T. R. Malthus as a prerequisite for the formation of the sustainable development ideology in the 1970s. The core of this ideology is the theory of “limits to growth”, declaring that the current trends of world population growth, industrial output expansion, increase of pollution and depletion of the planet’s natural potential will result in a global catastrophe, which can be prevented through limitation of the population reproduction and termination of the development of productive forces.
