The evolution of industrial districts in terms of their involvement in global value chains
is examined in the article. The author considers the modern approaches to the definition of industrial districts, stressing the importance of the impact of globalisation on their activities. The primary statistical data on Italian companies engaged in the jewelry industry are analysed in the paper. As a result, the author estimates the nature of the impact of the global jewelry market transformations on industrial districts and their position in the global value chains. In conclusion, the author makes an attempt to explain the reasons for heterogeneity of industrial districts’ internationalisation strategies.
