The article discusses the problem of teaching listening comprehension and analyses
traditional approaches of classifying listening types. On the basis of this analysis the
author suggests a new classification of listening types according to listening purposes.
The author gives examples of listening testing tasks for different listening types. Planning a sequence of lessons, the teacher should base the choice of a listening type on the listening purpose and students’ command of language.
