Impact of Shamanism Practices on the Formation of the Clan Identity

T. D. Bulgakova
Price: 50 руб.
The paper examines clan identity in the communities that practice shamanism from both the social and religious perspectives. Clan identity is constructed and activated as a means of community’s survival in an attempt to manage the risks faced by the community during shamanic rituals. One of such risks is ‘communal disease’ of the group of agnates caused by the shamanic activity of one of the members of the community. Unilinean descent gives the shamanists an opportunity to defi ne members of the community predisposed to communal disease and mitigate the associated risks.
Keywords: shamanism of the indigenous peoples of Siberia, clan identity, kinship, exogamy.
