The article is devoted to the formation of a person’s civic stance as a social and cultural phenomenon in the context of the development of military education in the Russian
Empire (from the 18th century till 1917). The author considers the evolution of ideas
about citizenship from the perspective of the pedagogical thought, and shows the specific methods of civic education in the education system of the Russian offi cer corps.
