JAPANESE CERAMICS OF THE EDO PERIOD (1603–1868): REVISITING THE PROBLEMS OF TYPOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION

А. А. Egorova
Price: 50 руб.
The article is devoted to the contemporary problems of typology and classifi cation in
Japanese ceramics of the Edo period (1603–1868), the most fruitful and multifarious
epoch in the history of Japanese ceramics. The development of the traditional Japanese ceramics classifi cation is considered in the wide sociocultural and artistic context of Japanese history and in close connection to the history of ceramics collecting. The author reveals several systematisation criteria, which were taken as a basis in early classifi cations: topographical, stylistic and functional as well as less developed technological criteria. The article covers the reasons for the adoption of terms and systematisation elements used in Japanese literature by Western art criticism. Itemising some drawbacks of modern classifi cations of Japanese ceramics, the author puts forward a model of analytical classifi cation, applicable both in scientifi c and practical museum work.
Key words: ceramics, applied and decorative arts, ceramics, Japan, classifi cation,
typology.
