Abstract. The author refers to the garden and park art of the 18th–19th centuries, which
is a unique cultural phenomenon that combines aesthetic and philosophical ideas of the
era, achievements of architecture, sculpture, landscape design and engineering. The paper reveals the role and main techniques of theatricalisation as a means of psychological impact on the viewer. Using semantic and iconological analysis of elements of a garden and park ensemble, comparative historical analysis of techniques of space organisation, cultural and semiotic approach, the paper attempts to generalise and systematise specifi c artistic techniques of theatricalisation, to consider them as a complete semiotic system. Particular attention is paid to the psychological aspects of perception, mechanisms of emotional impact of the theatricalised environment on the consciousness of the visitor. In conclusion, it is noted that a variety of “stage” effects and techniques were aimed at creating a special emotional atmosphere, involving the visitor in an intense internal dialog with cultural meanings and codes. The study and preservation of this precious layer of cultural heritage requires close attention of researchers and restorers, thoughtful analysis and careful professional approach.
