Abstract. The paper presents a retrospective analysis of the history of modifications in the
content and design of textbooks on the Chinese language and literature for primary and secondary schools in the PRC. The conditions and nature of the formation of the academic discipline “Language and Literature” after the formation of the PRC (since 1949) are analysed. The authors of the paper identify and study new trends in the development of textbooks on the Chinese language and literature for primary and secondary school students at the beginning of the 21st century, and carry out a functional analysis of the educational products under consideration.
