Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the oratorio “La Giuditta” by the famous
Venetian composer of the 18th century Benedetto Marcello (1686–1739). The author of the article reveals the regularities of the refraction of the oratorio genre in the works of the representatives of the Venetian school of composers, to which B. Marcello belonged, and highlights the story of creation of the work. The specifi cs of the interpretation of the biblical story are considered, and the parallels with the oratorio “La Giuditta” by A. Scarlatti are traced. The structure of Marcello’s oratorio is determined, and the principles of organisation of the musical fabric are indicated.
