Abstract. The article is devoted to the gradual formation of the harmonic type of thinking in polyphony of the strict style. A brief retrospective excursion into the citadel of the ancient doctrine of harmony leads to the main section of the article. The author’s attention is focused on the following aspects of the problem: the phonic scale of the Renaissance polyphony, its modal and textural features.
