The Issue of the Popular in Spanish Baroque

Abstract. The article reveals the concept of “popular” at the theoretical level, applicable
to characterising Spanish Baroque works of the 17th century. The author comprehends the chronological, typological and production boundaries of this concept. Parallels are drawn between Spanish polychrome sculpture and German broadsheet of the 17th century, which was widespread in the Baroque era. The example of arts of different nature, in relation to which the concepts of “circulation” and “popularity” can be applied metaphorically and literally, helps to identify the common thing that made Baroque art effective and relevant, and to perceive the concept of “popular” as a marker of the movement of European art of the early modern period towards ever greater mass character. In this case, the popular character of the Baroque is not a reference to folk culture, but evidence that such art was created by professional artists in order to be popular.
