Abstract. The vocal heritage of the Norwegian composer E. Grieg refl ects a unique
combination of musical folklore and compositional creativity. This paper considers the
vocal music by E. Grieg with the need to popularize it in China. The author emphasizes
urgency to master E. Grieg’s music romances and songs to ensure further growth of
Chinese vocal culture through the integration of the national and Western European
traditions. This contributes to the solution of such an important issue for China as the
interaction between the “old” and the “new”, the “Western” and the “traditional” in the
musical culture. The themes of Grieg’s romances and songs contribute to understanding
the place and role of man in the universe. This philosophical and ideological position
conforms to Chinese national thinking.
