Abstract. In this paper the authors consider the features of the dramatic composition of
Cio-Cio-san’s image from Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfl y”. In the authors’ opinion, predestination as the main specifi c feature is caused by the emphasized contrasting opposition between Japanese and American cultures personifi ed in the images of Madama Butterfly and Pinkerton. Intonation, timbre, text markers of the presented dramatic role are illustrated by the corresponding musical examples in the paper. The paper considers the depth of Cio-Cio-San’s image, its associations with both mythological layer and philosophical trends, which dominated in the epoch when the opera was staged.
