The purpose of the article is to conduct a comparative analysis of the historical aspects
in the formation of professional design training in Russia and China. The research
objectives are the following: to study the historical features of the use of the term
“design” and its analogues in Russia and China; to define common features and
guidelines for teaching design in the two states; to find differences in the systems
of designers’ professional training in Russia and China. The scientific novelty of
the research lies in comparing the historical aspects in the formation of professional
training systems for designers in Russia and China, identifying their strengths and
weaknesses in relation to each other. In Russia, independent scientific directions in
various aspects of professional design training have been formed, and China borrowed
the Western standards of designers’ higher education, successfully adapting them to
the unique national design traditions.
