This paper concerns English-language texts on Soviet art. It considers evaluative phrases made up of ethnonyms (Russian /Moscow, etc.) and names of Western artists. The method of continuous sampling was used to select 50 texts, 35 of which were texts written by native English speakers, and 15 were texts written by native Russian speakers. The analysis showed that the tactic of evaluative comparison with the use of precedent names of the type under consideration is a more common artistic means within art history discourse for native English speakers. It was revealed that phrases of this type function simultaneously on two levels. Although they generally act as a marker
of positive evaluation, such phrases presuppose the presence of hierarchy within the model itself, since a precedent name is the primary element, relative to which another name is evaluated.
