Modernity and Nationality in the Works of Ma Sicong

One of the most important fi gures in the musical art of China in the second half of the 20th century is Ma Sicong (1912 – 1987) – an outstanding musician and composer, the founder of many forms of the national violin music. The rich heritage of the composer is represented by opera, ballet, chorus, chamber, vocal, and piano music, but fi rst of all – violin music. This paper is devoted to identifying the specifi cs of Ma Sicong’s works, 
in particular, analyzing Chinese and European, modern and traditional features of his compositions. The study is intended to shed light on the peculiarities of introducing foreign elements of the Western tradition into the musical art of China, as well as to determine how Ma Sicong solved the problem of the correlation between national and modern elements in his compositions.
