The paper is devoted to the history of the Royal Academy of Arts in Great Britain,
its infl uence on the emergence and development of the professional art education
in the country. The author examines in detail the foundation of the Academy and
the history of its fi rst president Joshua Reynolds, sets out the features of teaching
and teaching methods. The author focuses on prerequisites for the foundation of
the Academy and studies peculiarities of the formation of English identity in the
fi eld of painting within the framework of studying at the Academy. The purpose of
the study is to determine and identify the changes that took place in the framework
of studying at the Royal Academy from its inception to the period of Frederick
Leighton’s presidency. The content of the concept of “genius” is determined,
methods of education of the ideal English painter are identifi ed, and the assess-
ment criteria are investigated. Scientifi c novelty lies in identifying the distinctive
features of the educational methodology at the Royal Academy and comparing
the presidencies of Joshua Reynolds and Frederick Leighton. The work resulted
in revealing dynamics of deviation from a strictly academic education at the Royal
Academy toward a more modernist approach.
