At the beginning of the XX century, folk themes were refl ected in the art of the book. Its visual elements contributed to the appearance of purely formal solutions in the organization of the book ensemble. Children’s books of this period were at the stage of searching for new means of artistic expression. National style became one of the tools that allowed us to re-evaluate the essence of children’s books and their artistic
design. The national-romantic direction of Russian Art Nouveau at the beginning of XX century meant not direct copying of works of ancient Russian and folk art, but fi gurative interpretation of their individual elements and symbols. The style of Russian popular print and folk toys, the compositional principles of handwritten books, and the art of calligraphy infl uenced the development of the children’s book artistic ensemble of early XX century.
