The paper is devoted to CNTO – the China National Traditional Orchestra,
which was founded in the 1920s. Within its short history, the Orchestra as a
music team of a new type has become an impressive representational phenom-
enon of the Chinese culture. Today China has a number of highly qualifi ed
orchestras, student university or college orchestras, amateur orchestras. The
most famous music team in China is China National Broadcast Orchestra,
other national orchestras abroad are China orchestras on Japan, Singapore,
Taiwan. The founders of the Orchestra relied on the model of western sym-
phony orchestra, organizing instruments into groups by typological features
and following the tradition of national ensemble music playing. Every group
of the instruments was thoroughly worked out in terms of optimal timbre,
pitch, dynamic sound. Practice and scientifi c thinking constantly cooperate
in the evolution of the China National Traditional Orchestra. Experimenting
is still integrated in the rehearsal process in order to reveal the color palette
capable of expressing the spirit of national culture to the full.
Keywords: China National Traditional Orchestra, Peng Xiuwen, bowed string instruments, plucked string instruments, erhu, guqin, wind instruments.
