The paper is devoted to the up-to-date problem of perception and evalua-
tion of a piece of music in the context of the triad “composer — performer —
listener” by B. V. Asafi ev and the tetrad “composer — performer — lis-
tener — thinker” by Yu. N. Kholopova. The author substantiates the idea of
the universal listening activity, which forms the fundamental basis for music
perception and which is the foundation of the professional work of a com-
poser, performer and researcher. The status of the recipient is differentiated,
depending on the presence or absence of the professional experience in this
area. The given examples show the features of the professional “hearing”
of a musical work and its assessment, which consists of the combination of
general aesthetic and special criteria necessary for a holistic examination
of a musical work and determining its place in the musical culture.
