St. Petersburg Union of Artists successfully held the exhibition “Watercolors
of the Sichuan Province in St. Petersburg” from August 22 to 27, 2017, which
attracted many Russians and received unanimous positive reviews. In his water-
color landscapes, Zeng Ming combined the essence of Chinese traditional aes-
thetics, the theory and concept of traditional painting, the colors and methods
of depicting the light of Western art, thereby forming his own author’s style of
painting. By carefully analyzing the artist’s watercolor work, one can notice
a special charm of the materials inherent in Chinese watercolor, the effects of
shuimo painting (shuimo monochrome painting), shuiyun (harmony of water),
and pomo (pomo spray painting). In addition, the key elements of the image can
be traced to the connection with the European romantic style. The artist’s works
embody a subjective understanding of the natural world, as a result of which
his individual watercolor style is formed, combining the ce-i style (painting
of ideas) and realism. Zeng Ming is deservedly considered to represent a new
generation of Chinese masters in the era of globalization, as well as an artist
who depicts a dialogue with nature.
Keywords: Zeng Ming, watercolorist, watercolor techniques, traditionalism, internationality.
