The paper deals with the phenomenon of explication in Russian and foreign translation studies, and attempts to distinguish the main characteristics of explication. The correlation of explication with generalization and specifi cation is analyzed. The theory of
relevance is used to analyze the correlation of implicit and explicit information in original and translated texts. Explication is considered in terms of development of the logical form of the original text explicatures and translation of the target text implicatures into target text explicatures.
Keywords: explication, specification, generalization, implicit information, explicature, implicature, relevance theory.
