Modernisation of musical instruments is one of the most important
driving factors in the development of national music, and national
musical instruments are the main element and the key to understanding
it. The study of the processes occurring in instrumental culture
contributes to understanding of the history of national music in
general. Generations of Chinese musicians through hard work and
wise listening to the sound of each instrument captured in it a special
national fl avor, recognisable throughout the world. The intercultural
integration of the 20th century, active development of Western musical
art caused serious changes in the design, technique, aesthetics of the
sound of stringed instruments in Сhina. The historical path of modernisation
of Сhinese string instruments is considered in this article
through the example of Chinese erhu.
Keywords: Сhinese music, stringed musical instruments, modernisation, design,
performing technique, erhu.
