The article discusses the issues related to the genre features of waltz in
the instrumental works of D. D. Shostakovich, based on the example
of his works of various sizes. The phenomenon of waltz as a means of
embodying the image and themes is studied from the point of view of harmonic,
melodic, modal and other components of music in the composer’s
works. The author of the paper draws parallels with other signifi cant
works of the composer, reveals intertextual connections, and highlights
associations with the heritage of Russian and European composers.
