The paper reveals the historical and cultural context of the
emergence of opera in Russia alongside with the fi rst Russian
professional singers. The formation of the national composing
school and the opera genre is traced. The author determines
the essential components of the formation of the Russian vocal
school of the late 18th century and notes that the Russian vocal
tradition was based on the synthesis of Italian bel canto and the
Russian school of singing. A galaxy of the fi rst Russian singers
and composers laid a fi rm foundation for the Russian professional
musical art.
