The article deals with the underdeveloped topic in the history of music —
the embodiment of the image of the fi rst Russian emperor Peter the Great
in European opera of the late 18th century and the fi rst half of the 19th
century. The attention is focused on “The North Star” by Giacomo Meyerbeer,
which is practically never performed and also completely forgotten
in Russia. The interpretation of the image of Peter the Great is revealed
through the analysis of the plot and musical stylistics. New materials are
introduced into the scientifi c use, enriching the ideas about one of the
most interesting pages of European opera. The obtained data can be a
starting point for future, more in-depth studies.
