MULTILINGUALISM OR PLURILINGUALISM? CLARIFICATION OF THE TERMS’ MEANINGS

The  article  discusses  the  meanings  of  two  seemingly  similar  terms:  multilingualism 
and plurilingualism. The critical literature review of Council of Europe documents and 
research literature shows that there are signicant differences between multilingual and 
plurilingual  societies,  and  that  the  concept  of  plurilingualism  of  individuals  calls  for 
the development of new approaches to teaching foreign languages and for rethinking 
language education goals. The article identies a strong correlation between the concept of  plurilingualsm  and  intercultural  communication,  mutual  understanding,  mutual 
respect and collaboration of speakers of various languages.
