Chinese Vocal Music of the XX Century in the Context of National Traditions

Chinese vocal music is one of the oldest musical cultures, its devel-
opment goes back to the several thousand years. This article is 
devoted to studying vocal masterpieces written by Chinese com-
posers of the 20th century on the example of the aria «Mulan goes 
into the army». It is the fi rst time, when the overview of evolution 
of Chinese vocal music of the 20th century has been presented. The 
author analyzes aesthetic characteristics using the examples of 
works by leading Chinese composers and musicologists. In conclu-
sion, the author comes to the idea that in contemporary Chinese 
vocal music, creation of artistic forms is based on a variety of 
national Chinese traditions.
