The article briefly describes the example of modernisation of art education in the field of traditional applied art. The newly formed stage of higher professional education in the field of Russian art varnishes is described, the need for the system of continuous professional education of modern artists of traditional applied art is emphasised. The components of training of Fedoskino varnish miniature painters are considered. The author highlights the main features of the system of continuing professional education in the field of varnish miniature painting. The author also shows the need to preserve the ethno-pedagogical methodology of training miniature painters, and recommends to supplement it with relevant modern teaching aids. The experience of the Fedoskino branch of the Higher School of Folk Arts (Academy) is evaluated.
