The article discusses the formation of Xinjiang folk art and its role in the modern system of education of artists and designers. The author marks the objects of spiritual legacy under state protection. The main types of folk art included in the programmes of educational institutions in Xinjiang are analysed on the basis of the classiBcation of Professor Zhang Daoyi. The importance of including practical training in the curriculum related to the discipline “Decorative Arts” is established as a result of studying the programme of the training course “Xinjiang National Folk Art” at Xinjiang Arts Institute.
