The paper is devoted to the methodological issues of the English language teaching in 
terms of applying the functional approach. A number of scientiBc opinions on the essence of illocutionary competence are provided. The authors also give the most comprehensive taxonomy of speech acts and explain the application of the linguistic scientiBc data in the English language teaching methodology. Special attention is paid to practical cases of applying language functions in communicative situations that students of higher military educational institutions can face in their future professional activities.
