Substance is investigated in the paper as an ontological basis of personality in the context of the becoming of personalism and the anthropological turn in the European theism of the 19th century and Russian religious philosophy. Substance (in the framework of the European theism of the 19th century and Russian religious philosophy) is an ontological basis of personality, a base of the ontological Self and mind. Substance can be both universal and individual. Monad is an anthropological (psychological) basis of personality. In this sense, substance is a source of the ontological Self, and monad is a source of the psychological Self. Within the framework of personalism based on the European theism of the 19th century and Russian religious philosophy, the author distinguishes three criteria for individuation: the presence of individual body, monad and substance. The psychologisation of human personality within the framework of these philosophical directions is a result of the anthropological turn.
