In  order  for  students  to  attain  a  certain  degree  of  translation  competence  and  to  be successful  at  workplace,  their  level  of  phonetic  competence  must  be  fairly  well-
developed.  Practical  experience  of  teaching  a  foreign  language  at  university  shows that numerous mistakes and inaccuracies made by students engaged in consecutive and
simultaneous  interpreting  are  often  associated  with  underdeveloped  listening  skills.
The authors propose the original system of practical exercises to be used in and out of
classroom and provide recommendations on suitable teaching materials in an attempt to
help future interpreters and translators develop their phonemic perception and attentive
listening skills as well as take advantage of the cognitive mechanism of probabilistic
forecasting and their background knowledge.
Key words: phonetic competence, interpreter’s listening skills, phonemic perception,
precision information, probabilistic forecasting.
