The paper is devoted to the search for ethno-cultural uniqueness of the expression
of moral qualities in the vocabulary of the Chinese language with the meaning
“good”. The main assumption about prevailing the ethical criterion over the
aesthetic one is actualized in the frequency of using lexical units containing the
lexeme “good”. An extensive authentic material of contemporary Chinese fi ction
and essay studies is used for the analysis. By the method of continuous sampling,
the authors selected 52 lexical units with the lexeme “good”. These examples are
analyzed in terms of correspondence of the lexical units, used by Chinese writers,
to their vocabulary defi nitions. The results of the study are presented in the form
of summary tables. The authors come to a conclusion that a thorough semantic
analysis is needed to select an adequate translation equivalent.
