The article presents the results of the study on leadership theories. The theories of Russian and foreign scientists are described. The author of the paper gives an overview of the concepts of leader and leadership and reveals the basic theoretical grounds of the leadership phenomenon. The article presents the results and analysis of the study on the leader’s image among students. The research methods are: correspondence survey of respondents, comparative analysis of data, statistical processing and analysis of research results. The perception of leaders’ qualities is studied in the real and ideal images. The author shows what qualities modern leaders do not possess from the students’ point of view, and analyses the importance of certain qualities and values for students in the ideal image of a leader.
