The article primarily deals with the problem of Chinese impressionism in
piano music. Tan Dun is one of the most famous composers of the Сhinese
origin. He boasts universal attention to his personality due to diverse
musicworks, a variety of musical styles and profound cultural content of
his pieces. His piano cycle “Eight memories in watercolor” is the work in
which the Chinese traditional musical culture is merged together with the
best modern devices of the West. The author made an attempt to interpret
the images of the piano cycle and to specify the technique of playing musi-
cal miniatures. Besides, the author carried out the comprehensive analysis
and evaluated artistic signifi cance of Tan Dun’s works.
There are pieces among them, such as “Missing Moon”, “Herdboy’s Song”,
“Floating Clouds”, where impressionism style is clear and understandable.
The article is devoted to its research in the cycle by Tan Dun.
